Vaiśampāyana said: O Janamejaya! Kuntī summoned the undecaying Dharma for conception, after Gāndhārī had been with child for a year.

Through his powers of yoga, Dharma assumed form and she united with him. Consequently, the one with the beautiful hips obtained a son who was the best of all living beings.

"There is no doubt that he will be supreme among those who uphold dharma. Pāṇḍu's first-born son will be famous by the name of Yudhiṣṭhira.
"इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि वह धर्म का समर्थन करने वालों में सर्वोच्च होगा। पांडु का पहला पुत्र युधिष्ठिर के नाम से प्रसिद्ध होगा।"

He will also be a famous king, renowned in the three worlds—endowed with fame, radiance and adherence to vows."

An extraordinary event occurred as soon as Vṛkodara was born. Falling down from his mother's lap, he shattered a mountain into fragments with his body.
वृकोदर के जन्म लेते ही एक असाधारण घटना घटी। माँ की गोद से गिरकर उसने अपने शरीर से एक पर्वत को टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर डाला।
Kuntī was asleep and suddenly awoke, frightened by a tiger and for getting that Vṛkodara was asleep in her lap.
कुंती सो रही थी और अचानक एक बाघ से डरकर जाग गई और उसने देखा कि वृकोदर उसकी गोद में सो रहा है।
The son, whose body was as hard as vajra, fell on the mountain. As he fell, he shattered the mountain into a hundred pieces with his body. On witnessing the mountain break in this way, Pāṇḍu was astounded.
वज्र के समान कठोर शरीर वाला पुत्र पर्वत पर गिर पड़ा। गिरते ही उसने अपने शरीर से पर्वत को सौ टुकड़ों में तोड़ डाला। पर्वत को इस प्रकार टूटा हुआ देखकर पाण्डु को बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ।
O supreme among those of the Bhārata lineage! O lord of the earth! Duryodhana was born on the very same day that Bhīmā was born.
हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! दुर्योधन का जन्म उसी दिन हुआ जिस दिन भीम का जन्म हुआ था।

By pleasing him with austerities, I can obtain a son who is immensely strong. The son that he will give me will be the best. I shall therefore perform the greatest of austerities in mind, deeds and speech."
मैं उन्हें तपस्या से प्रसन्न करके अत्यंत बलशाली पुत्र प्राप्त कर सकता हूँ। वह मुझे जो पुत्र देगा वह सर्वोत्तम होगा। इसलिए मैं मन, कर्म और वाणी से सबसे बड़ी तपस्या करूँगा।"
Thereupon, after consulting with maharṣi-s, the immensely energetic Pāṇḍu of the Kuru lineage instructed Kuntī to observe a sacred vow for one year.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! तीस देवताओं के स्वामी भगवान को प्रसन्न करने की इच्छा से, जिसके हृदय में धर्म था, उसने सूर्य की पूजा की।
Indra responded after a long time. "I will give you a son who will be famous in the three worlds.
बहुत देर बाद इन्द्र ने उत्तर दिया। “मैं तुम्हें एक ऐसा पुत्र दूँगा जो तीनों लोकों में विख्यात होगा।
He will ensure the welfare of gods, Brāhmana-s and relatives. I will give you a son who will destroy all his enemies."
वह देवताओं, ब्राह्मणों और रिश्तेदारों का कल्याण सुनिश्चित करेगा। मैं तुम्हें एक पुत्र दूँगा जो अपने सभी शत्रुओं का नाश कर देगा।”
After the great-souled Vāsava had spoken to the king of the Kuru lineage, the one with dharma in his heart spoke to Kuntī, remembering the words of the king of the gods.
जब महामहिम वसाव ने कुरु वंश के राजा से बात की, तब हृदय में धर्म रखने वाले ने देवताओं के राजा के शब्दों को याद करते हुए कुंती से बात की।
"O one with the beautiful hips! O sweetsmiling one! Devoted to morality, great-souled, radiant as the sun, invincible, action-oriented, extremely wonderful to look at
"हे सुंदर कूल्हों वाले! हे मधुरमुस्कुराने वाले! नीति के प्रति समर्पित, महान आत्मा वाले, सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी, अजेय, कार्य-उन्मुख, देखने में अत्यंत अद्भुत
and endowed with Kṣatriya energy—this is the son we will receive through the grace of the king of the gods. Summon him."
और क्षत्रिय शक्ति से संपन्न - यह वह पुत्र है जिसे हम देवताओं के राजा की कृपा से प्राप्त करेंगे। उसे बुलाओ।”
At these words, the famous one summoned Śākra. The lord of the gods arrived and Arjuna was born from him.
इन शब्दों पर, प्रसिद्ध व्यक्ति ने शक्र को बुलाया। देवताओं के स्वामी आये और उनसे अर्जुन का जन्म हुआ।
As soon as the son was born, an invisible voice was heard in the sky, with a thundering and deep roar.
पुत्र के जन्म लेते ही आकाश में तेज गर्जना और गहरी गर्जना के साथ एक अदृश्य आवाज सुनाई दी।
"O Kuntī! He will be like Kārtavīrya and Śibi in prowess, invincible like Indra. He will spread your fame everywhere.
"हे कुंती! वह पराक्रम में कार्तवीर्य और शिबि के समान होगा, इंद्र के समान अजेय होगा। वह आपकी प्रसिद्धि हर जगह फैलाएगा।
As Viṣṇu increased Aditi's happiness, like Viṣṇu, Arjuna will increase your happiness.
जैसे विष्णु ने अदिति की ख़ुशी बढ़ाई, विष्णु की तरह, अर्जुन तुम्हारी ख़ुशी बढ़ाएगा।
He will bring under his sway the countries of Madra, Kuru, Kekaya, Cedi, Kāśi and Kārūṣa and establish the prosperity of the Kuru-s.
वह मद्र, कुरु, केकय, चेदि, काशी और कारूष देशों को अपने अधीन कर लेगा और कुरु-वंश की समृद्धि स्थापित करेगा।
Through the valour of his arms, Havyavāhana will be supremely satisfied with the fat of all beings in Khāṇḍava.
अपनी भुजाओं के पराक्रम से हव्यवाहन खाण्डव के सभी प्राणियों की चर्बी से परम संतुष्ट होंगे।
With his brothers, this immensely strong warrior will vanquish all small chiefs and perform three sacrifices.

O Kuntī! In valour, he will be the equal of Viṣṇu and Jāmadagni's son Rāma. He will be the greatest among those endowed with valour and he will be invincible.
हे कुन्ती! वीरता में वह विष्णु और जमदग्नि के पुत्र राम के बराबर होगा। वह वीरता से सम्पन्न लोगों में सबसे महान होगा और अजेय होगा।
He will acquire all kinds of divine weapons. He will be a bull among men and he will regain the lost fortune."
उसे सभी प्रकार के दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्र प्राप्त हो जायेंगे। वह मनुष्यों में बैल बनेगा और खोया हुआ भाग्य पुनः प्राप्त करेगा।"
When Kuntī was in her delivery room, these were the wonderful words that were heard from the sky and Kuntī heard them.
जब कुंती अपने प्रसव कक्ष में थी, तो ये अद्भुत शब्द थे जो आकाश से सुनाई दिए और कुंती ने उन्हें सुना।
The ascetics who lived on Śataśṛṅga also heard these loud words and were supremely delighted.
शतश्रृंग पर रहने वाले तपस्वियों ने भी ये ऊंचे शब्द सुने और अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए।

The devarṣi-s, Indra and the other gods and the sound of drums being played raised an enormous clamour in the sky.

Wearing divine garlands and garments, adorned in every ornament, the āpsara-s danced and sang Bībhatsu's praise. With the handsome Tumburu, the other gāndharva-s began to sing —

The Aśvin-s, the eight vasu-s, the immensely powerful marut-s, the viśvadeva-s and the saddhyas were also assembled there.

with great energy, great anger and great strength. Many other serpents also assembled there.

There were also Vinatā's sons — Tārkṣya, Ariṣṭanemi, Gāruḍa, Asitadhvaja, Aruṇā and Āruṇi.
विनता के पुत्र भी थे - तार्क्ष्य, अरिष्टनेमि, गरुड़, असितध्वज, अरुणा और अरुणि।
When they saw this great wonder, the supreme hermits were astounded. Their affection towards Pāṇḍu's sons increased even more.

But the immensely famous Pāṇḍu was again greedy for more sons. He summoned the beautiful Kuntī yet again.
लेकिन अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध पांडु फिर से अधिक पुत्रों के लालची थे। उन्होंने सुन्दर कुन्ती को फिर बुलाया।
However, she said, "A fourth son has not been heard of, even in times of calamity. After that, a woman is called promiscuous. After the fifth, she is called a courtesan.

आप धर्म के मार्ग में विद्वान हैं। आप बुद्धिमान हैं. तुम सन्तान की अभिलाषा के कारण क्यों व्यवस्था का उल्लंघन करते हो, और ऐसे बोलते हो मानो तुम अक्ल खो बैठे हो?”
